Youth Arts Program

Changing the Odds - Summer 2015

The School of Dramatic Art in partnership with WEA enjoyed their third successful summer with the youth arts program, Changing the Odds: Community Transformation through the Arts (CTO).

Together the students, leaders, and guest artists collaborated to write and direct "The Way Station." A play that was a collection of styles, set in a world that welcomed song, dance, clown, and free expression. The stories were fictionalized, but were based on real life concerns and struggles presented by the youth over their six weeks together. In sharing this piece, the youth hoped to inspire others to make a positive change and remind everyone that we can overcome insurmountable odds if we stick together.

Changing the Odds - Summer 2014

The School of Dramatic Art in partnership with WEA enjoyed another successful summer with the youth arts program, Changing the Odds: Community Transformation through the Arts (CTO).

"Truly AWESOME! Best describes CTO 2014. The energy and work that filled the Jackman Dramatic Art Centre this summer has been uplifting and inspiring. The CTO Youth have 'schooled us’ once again this year in reminding us of the power of our stories. Their journey to this moment has led them to make many new discoveries - all of which are craftily weaved throughout our 2014 presentation of ‘Secrets’.  We are all grateful to have shared six weeks with such remarkable youth, leaders, volunteers, guests, and guest artists."

Changing the Odds - Summer 2013

A Unique Summer Program for Youth

The School of Dramatic Art in partnership with WEA enjoyed a spectacular success this summer with the launch of an exciting new arts program, Changing the Odds: Community Transformation through the arts (CTO).

CTO 2013 was a 6 week summer program of discovery, risk, play, friendship, community and above all great FUN. We set out to create an arts experience that would encourage self –discovery and promote self-development among youth. And we did exactly that! Through an invigorating interaction with the arts, a community made up of youth, leaders, artists and volunteers participated in an exhilarating arts program.

Since then participants return to the university to reconnect with their CTO community. They attend University Players shows, meet with actors and theatre artists and learn all about what goes into putting on a play.

Based on the success of CTO 2013, and through the generous support of donors, another session of CTO will be offered in the summer of 2014. This is what we have planned: Participants will explore their own stories through exciting drama experiences. These stories will then be crafted into a presentation that youth will perform for friends, family and members of the public. The essence of the CTO experience is best captured in words spoken by a CTO 2013 PARTICIPANT, “Telling our stories…let’s us breathe out.”

We invite you to join us in August 2014 to “breathe out” with us as we tell our stories.

Stay tuned.
